You do not need to replace everything.

Keep what already works. If something is causing difficulty, consider one manageable change. These are ideas to explore, rather than products everyone with ALPIMS-related conditions needs.

What do the labels tell us?

Fragrance-free, low-irritant & Sensitive Choice

Fragrance-aware choices

Look for explicit fragrance-free information and check the ingredients. “Sensitive”, “natural”, “low odour” and “unscented” are not interchangeable with fragrance-free. Essential oils are scented ingredients too. Fragrance-free products can still have an ingredient smell.

Low-irritant options

This is a useful aim, not a promise of no reaction. Ingredients, concentration, application method and your own sensitivities all matter.

Sensitive Choice

The National Asthma Council Australia’s programme uses an independent expert panel to assess potential benefits for people with asthma and allergies. Approved products carry its blue butterfly symbol.

Check the exact product: approval does not automatically apply to every item in a brand. It does not guarantee fragrance-free ingredients, or suitability for migraine, environmental sensitivity, MCAS or a particular skin allergy.

Cleaning · less scent & simpler routines

Look for: fragrance-free information, clear instructions and a product suited to the surface and task.

Koh Universal Cleaner

Listed by Sensitive Choice as an approved cleaning product. Koh describes its cleaning range on that listing as free from fragrance and dyes.

Cloths, mops & practical tools

A washable cloth or comfortable mop may simplify some tasks. Compare grip, weight, effort and laundering needs. Follow hygiene requirements; a cloth with water does not replace disinfection where it is needed.

Use thoughtfully: follow the label, ventilate where practical, minimise inhaling spray mist and never mix cleaning products. Cleaning and disinfecting are different tasks.

Laundry · fragrance-aware clothes & bedding

Look for: detergent without added fragrance, dosing instructions and options that suit your machine and fabrics.

Koh Sensitive Laundry Liquid

The manufacturer’s current information describes it as having no added fragrance, perfumes or masking agents, and as Sensitive Choice approved.

If reducing scent is your aim, leave out essential oil additions, scent beads and fragranced softeners. A fragrance-free wash may still leave scent from a previous product or fragranced laundry nearby.

Skin & body · a simpler starting point

Look for: a fragrance-free cleanser and moisturiser that suit your skin, with as few steps as you need.

QV Gentle Wash

A soap-free cleanser to explore for dry or sensitive skin. Check the current ingredients and directions before choosing.

CeraVe Moisturising Lotion

The Australian manufacturer describes this lotion as fragrance-free. Texture and ingredient tolerance still vary from person to person.

Hair & personal care · fewer scented steps

Look for: fragrance-free shampoo, conditioner and personal care items with clear ingredient lists.

QV hair care

QV describes its Hair range as free from fragrance and soap. Check the particular shampoo or conditioner, rather than assuming every QV product has the same ingredients.

Compare scalp comfort, rinsing effort and packaging. A product you tolerate with an easy-to-use pump may be more useful than a complicated routine.

Bedroom & air · comfort without added scent

Ideas to compare: washable bedding, mattress and pillow protectors, and products listed in the Sensitive Choice directory.

For an air purifier, compare room coverage, filter type, replacement costs and noise at the setting you would actually use. Avoid ozone-generating devices. Air cleaning does not replace addressing moisture, mould or pollution sources.

Choose bedding by texture, warmth and washing needs. Leave out scented room sprays or diffusers if fragrance bothers you.

Sensory comfort & easier daily tasks

Fragrance is only one part of comfort. Noise, light, texture, weight and effort may matter just as much.

  • Soft, comfortable clothing with manageable seams and labels.
  • Adjustable lighting with a comfortable brightness.
  • Hearing protection for genuinely noisy tasks; seek individual advice if sound sensitivity is persistent.
  • Lightweight kitchen tools, easy-open containers and comfortable handles.
  • Simple reminders, labelled storage and tools you can reach while seated.

Check whether a tool reduces your effort in practice. These ideas do not carry an implied Sensitive Choice approval.

Before buying: a small check

Five questions to help you choose
  1. What am I trying to make easier? Choose one specific need.
  2. What is in this exact product? Check fragrance, ingredients and your known allergens.
  3. What does its approval cover? Check the current listing and exact variant.
  4. Will it be comfortable to use? Consider smell, noise, texture, grip and effort.
  5. Can I start small? Consider a small pack, sample or return policy where available.

If a product has previously caused a significant reaction, seek individual advice before trying it again. You do not need to test every option.
