Autonomic Nervous System Regulation

Your autonomic nervous system helps manage many body functions that happen automatically β€” including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, sweating and temperature regulation.

When these systems are under strain, the useful question may not simply be β€œHow do I calm down?” but: What does my body need right now?

Body regulation

Autonomic regulation is not the same as simply relaxing

The autonomic nervous system helps regulate automatic processes throughout the body.

Symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, nausea, temperature intolerance, sweating changes, fatigue or feeling faint can sometimes involve autonomic function.

These symptoms can also have many other causes. New, severe or unexplained symptoms deserve appropriate medical assessment.

Supporting autonomic regulation

What may help the body work with less strain?

The right approach depends on what is causing the symptoms.

Position

Sitting or lying down may help when symptoms worsen upright or when faintness develops.

Fluids

Adequate hydration can be important for some autonomic conditions, particularly those involving low blood pressure or orthostatic symptoms.

Hydration & Autonomic Symptoms Coming Soon

Salt β€” When Appropriate

Some people with particular orthostatic disorders are advised to increase salt, but this needs to fit the individual’s health and medical advice.

Temperature

Heat can worsen symptoms for some people. Cooling the environment or reducing heat exposure may reduce additional strain.

Environment

Meals

Meal timing, size and digestive demands can influence symptoms for some people.

Food & Autonomic Symptoms Coming Soon

Pacing

Matching activity to available capacity may reduce repeated symptom escalation.

Compression

Compression garments are used by some people with orthostatic intolerance, but the type and suitability vary between individuals.

Breathing & Relaxation

Gentle breathing or relaxation can help some people reduce an additional stress response around symptoms.

These strategies do not replace treatment for an underlying autonomic disorder.

Regulation

Medication & Medical Treatment

Some autonomic disorders need condition-specific medication or treatment.

Look at the total load

What may make autonomic regulation harder?

Sometimes several things are placing demands on the body at once.

Heat

Hot weather, hot showers and overheated environments may worsen symptoms for some people.

Heat Intolerance Coming Soon

Standing

Prolonged upright posture may be particularly difficult when orthostatic intolerance is present.

Standing & Orthostatic Load Coming Soon

Illness

Infection, fever, dehydration or other illness may temporarily increase autonomic symptoms.

Pain & Migraine

Pain and migraine can add substantial physiological and sensory load.

Migraines & ALPIMS

Sensory Overload

Light, sound, smell and other sensory demands may increase the total amount the system is managing.

Sensory Support

Low Capacity

Autonomic symptoms can be harder to manage when someone is already exhausted or recovering from previous exertion.

Rest

Large or Complex Demands

Rushing, prolonged activity, multiple appointments or little recovery time may compound physical symptoms.

Reduce Load

Emotional Stress

Fear, conflict and emotional distress can add another layer of physiological demand.

Not Knowing What Is Happening

Uncertainty can make symptoms more frightening and may delay appropriate treatment.

Professional Care
Autonomic symptoms and anxiety can overlap without being the same thing.

A racing heart, shaking, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness may occur during anxiety, during an autonomic episode, or for another medical reason.

Looking at timing, posture, temperature, activity, meals, illness, emotional context and other symptoms may help clarify the pattern.

Autonomic regulation & ALPIMS

One support may help several parts of the picture

Autonomic symptoms may overlap with migraine, fatigue, sensory sensitivity, pain, digestive symptoms, anxiety, sleep difficulties and reduced day-to-day capacity.

This does not mean they all have the same cause. It means that practical supports may sometimes reduce several kinds of load at once.

Professional care

Autonomic symptoms sometimes need medical assessment

Symptoms such as recurrent fainting, persistent dizziness, unusual heart-rate changes, blood-pressure problems, significant digestive symptoms or substantial heat intolerance may need assessment to determine what is happening.

Assessment can also help distinguish autonomic dysfunction from other conditions that can produce similar symptoms.

Treatment depends on the underlying problem and may include individualised changes to fluids, salt, compression, medication, activity or other aspects of care.

Seek urgent medical care for symptoms such as significant chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, prolonged loss of consciousness or other severe or rapidly changing symptoms.

Am I safe?
Do I need to sit or lie down?
Am I too hot?
Do I need food or appropriate fluids?
Have I exceeded my capacity?
What else is adding load?

Autonomic regulation is not about forcing the body to β€œcalm down.”

Sometimes the useful response is rest. Sometimes it is cooling, hydration, position, pacing, treatment or reducing another source of load.

And sometimes the most important next step is finding out medically what is causing the symptoms.
