Expand
Expand is the part of the ALPIMS Care Cycle where you can explore participation, connection, skills, activities or experiences that matter to you.
It is not about pushing through symptoms or proving that you can do more. Expansion works best when it grows from available capacity rather than pressure.
What could I expand? β Back to Respond βExpansion is possibility, not pressure.
There may be times when protecting capacity is the priority. There may also be times when you have enough room to explore something more.
The question is not necessarily βCan I make myself do more?β but βWhat feels possible with the capacity I have?β
Expansion can be very small. It might mean sitting outside for five minutes, preparing part of a meal, sending a message, doing a little more of a task yourself or returning to something you enjoy.
You do not have to be in Expand.
Rest, Reduce and Pace are not preparation stages that you must complete before you are allowed to progress.
They are useful responses in their own right. If your body, mind or circumstances need them, returning to them is part of the ALPIMS cycle.
Expand is available when it fits β not something you have to earn.Is there enough room?
You do not need to feel completely well or have unlimited energy. The question is whether there seems to be enough capacity and stability to experiment without sacrificing something more important.
Expansion may be worth exploring whenβ¦
- essential needs are reasonably covered
- your current routine feels relatively sustainable
- there is some capacity left after basic demands
- you feel interest, curiosity or readiness
- you can start with a small version
- you have room to recover afterwards if needed
- you can change the plan if your capacity changes
You may need something else first whenβ¦
- you are already exceeding your available capacity
- basic needs are being missed
- you are trying to expand because you feel guilty
- you are repeatedly crashing after activity
- the current load is not sustainable
- you need more support or accommodation first
- your body or mind is strongly signalling a need to stop
Expansion can happen in many directions.
It does not have to mean exercise, work or productivity. You might want more connection, independence, enjoyment, creativity, confidence or participation.
Participation
Spend a little more time somewhere, join part of an activity, go somewhere meaningful or participate in a modified way.
Everyday Life
Take back part of a routine, prepare something, manage a small task or become more involved in something another person has been doing for you.
Connection
Send a message, spend time with someone, join a family activity or gently widen your social world.
Interests & Learning
Return to a hobby, read, create, learn something, work on a project or follow an interest simply because it matters to you.
Movement & Activity
Where appropriate for your health and circumstances, explore movement or physical activity that fits your current capacity.
Choice & Possibility
Try something new, make more of your own decisions, change a routine or explore a direction that feels meaningful.
Choose one thing that matters.
You do not need a complete rehabilitation plan or a list of goals.
More time outside?
More connection?
More independence?
More creativity?
More movement?
More participation?
More enjoyment?
Choose something that matters enough to be worth using some of your available capacity.
Make the first version smaller than you think it needs to be.
Expansion does not need to begin with the full activity. You can test a smaller version and learn from what happens.
You do not have to expand without support.
Sometimes the difference between βI can’t do thisβ and βI can participateβ is what is available around the person.
What happened when you tried it?
The aim is to learn from your response rather than decide whether you succeeded or failed.
It fitted well
The activity felt manageable and the after-effects stayed within a level you can reasonably accommodate. You might repeat the same amount before deciding whether anything needs to change.
It was a bit much
You managed it, but the cost was higher than expected. Try changing the duration, demands, environment, support or recovery around it.
It cost too much
A significant increase in symptoms, overload or loss of function is useful information. Make it smaller, pause it or return to Rest, Reduce or Pace as appropriate.
Expansion is not the same as pushing.
Does Expand mean I should keep increasing activity?
No. Expansion can mean trying something, repeating the same manageable amount, modifying it, or deciding not to continue.
The goal is useful participation that fits your circumstances, not continual increases for their own sake.
What if I can technically do something but it wipes me out afterwards?
Being able to complete an activity does not necessarily mean the activity fits your current capacity.
Consider the whole cost β including preparation, travel, sensory and cognitive demands, recovery time and what you can no longer do afterwards.
What if I need support to do it?
Supported participation is still participation. Using another person, an accommodation, a device or a modified version of an activity does not make the activity less meaningful.
What if my capacity changes from day to day?
The plan can change too. You might have a fuller version, a smaller version and a βnot todayβ option.
Flexibility can be part of successful expansion rather than evidence that the plan has failed.
What if I become worse after trying to expand?
Do not assume that worsening means you need to push through it. Consider whether the activity exceeded your current capacity, whether it needs to be modified, or whether another health issue needs professional review.
For conditions where activity can cause delayed or prolonged symptom worsening, individual medical guidance may be particularly important.
Do I have to return to what I used to do?
No. Expansion does not have to mean restoring an old version of life. It can also mean finding new ways of participating that fit who you are and what is possible now.
Expand is one response β not the destination.
What you need can change. The useful response is the one that best fits the capacity and situation you have now.
Expansion can be small and still matter.
A little more connection. A little more choice. A little more participation. Something enjoyable returning to your day. Or simply discovering that one thing has become easier.
You do not have to push the edge of your capacity.
Explore what there is room for.
ALPIMS provides general information and practical support ideas. Individual conditions and circumstances differ. Increasing activity is not appropriate in the same way for every health condition. Where activity or exertion causes significant, delayed or prolonged symptom worsening, or where there are medical concerns, seek appropriate individual professional guidance.
