Porridge & Fruit

Soft, creamy oats with a simple fruit topping. A warm breakfast, with adaptations to suit your needs.

Serves: 1 Prep: about 2 minutes Cook: 5–8 minutes

Ingredients

  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup water, plus extra if needed
  • ½ banana, sliced
  • A small handful of blueberries

Simple steps

  1. Combine. Put the oats, milk and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Cook gently. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat. Cook for 5–8 minutes, stirring regularly, until the oats are soft and creamy.
  3. Adjust the texture. Add a little more milk or water if the porridge is too thick.
  4. Add fruit. Spoon into a bowl and top with banana and blueberries.
  5. Enjoy. Allow to cool to a comfortable temperature before eating.

Cooking time varies with the oats. Follow the packet instructions if they differ.

Nourish & regular eating

A manageable breakfast

A simple, familiar meal can make regular eating easier when energy or concentration is limited. Adjust the portion to your appetite and needs.

Sweetness & sugar

The fruit adds sweetness. A little sugar, honey or another topping is optional. Choose what makes the meal enjoyable for you.

Keep it flexible

You do not need every topping or a perfect presentation. Plain porridge, fruit served separately or a smaller serving may suit you better on some days.

Adaptations & dietary needs

Milk choices

Use your usual dairy or plant milk. Different choices may change the flavour and creaminess.

Fruit choices

Swap the banana and blueberries for pear, stewed apple or another fruit you enjoy and tolerate.

Texture preferences

  • Use quick oats for a smoother texture.
  • Add extra liquid for softer porridge.
  • Mash the banana or use soft cooked fruit.
  • Serve the fruit separately if preferred.

Allergies & prescribed diets

Contains milk when made with dairy milk. Check oat, milk and topping labels against your individual requirements.

If you follow a prescribed diet, check that the oats and substitutions fit that plan. This recipe is not labelled as suitable for a particular food intolerance.

Keeping restrictions manageable

Choose adaptations that address your needs while keeping meals enjoyable and varied. If restrictions make eating difficult, a qualified dietitian can help you find suitable alternatives.

ALPIMS notes — make breakfast easier

Low energy, pain or difficulty standing

Sit to prepare the fruit if helpful. Ask someone to stir the porridge or carry the bowl. Choose help that fits your capacity.

Brain fog & planning

Put out the ingredients first. Follow one numbered step at a time. Stay nearby while the porridge cooks.

Microwave option

Follow the microwave instructions on your oat packet. Use a large microwave-safe bowl with room for bubbling.

Let it stand, stir carefully and check the temperature. The bowl may be hot.

Sensory preferences

Adjust the thickness, temperature and fruit texture to your preferences. Familiar ingredients and a favourite bowl may make breakfast more comfortable.

Practical support

Someone else could gather the ingredients, prepare the fruit or wash up. One small piece of help can make the meal easier.
