Anxiety

Symptoms of anxiety can overlap with sensory overload

People with conditions associated with sensory overload are more likely to experience anxiety. These conditions can include

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Misophonia
  • ME/CFS and fibromyalgia
  • PTSD

Symptoms for some people can include shutdown or meltdowns, or other symptoms of emotional dysregulation.

A common treatment for emotional dysregulation is DBT which incorporates CBT and core mindfulness, along with some other including ABC Please

Doing things to help break the anxiety cycle can help reduce sensory overload, however some people need to manage it.

Hyperventiliation syndrome can cause symptoms that overlap anxiety and may accompany a panic attack.

Hyperventilation occurs in dysautonomia/POTS

May help

Anxiety is a common symptom of dysautonomia syndromes including POTS, joint hypermobility, ME/CFS and fibromyalgia, mitral valve prolapse syndrome.

For POTS treatments can include increased salt and fluids.

In dysautonomia heat and dehydration (and vasodilation) can make symptoms worse.

Trauma has a complicated relationship with dysautonomia

Long term anxiety may occur after a mild brain trauma – concussion/other https://www.cognitivefxusa.com/blog/long-term-anxiety-after-concussion

Anxiety can occur as a result of nerve trauma, and may be more severe if vagus nerve damage has occurred, impacts the autonomic nervous system, can cause sympathetic NS dominance

Anxiety is one of the cluster of symptom that can occur in PTSD, micro trauma is common in Autism, but not be realised due to masking. People with PTSD can become irritable and emotionally reactive. Anger (different to Autism Meltdowns) can occur.
