Nutritional Deficiency Testing

Many deficiencies are:

  • Common
  • Under-recognised
  • Easily tested
  • Treatable

And they can affect multiple domains at once

Why Test?

Nutritional deficiencies can look like:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Low mood
  • Brain fog
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations
  • Headache
  • Neuropathy
  • Hair loss
  • Poor sleep
  • Increased pain sensitivity

Treating the deficiency may significantly improve symptoms — sometimes more than restrictive diets.

Common Nutrients to Screen

Testing should be guided by your doctor, but commonly considered nutrients include:

  • Iron studies (ferritin, iron saturation)
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folate
  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium (serum is limited but may still be used)
  • Zinc (in selected cases)
  • Thyroid function (not a nutrient, but commonly checked alongside)

In people with fatigue, dizziness, migraine, neuropathy, or low mood, iron and B12 are especially important.

Screening for Celiac Disease should also be considered.
