Laxity

  • Ligamentous laxity, also known as joint hypermobility means the ligaments (which connect bones to each other) are looser than usual, allowing joints to bend more than normal.
  • While it can be advantageous for some (like dancers or gymnasts), it can also lead to pain, instability, and an increased risk of injuries.
  • Ligamentous laxity can affect one or multiple joints, and its severity varies from person to person. 

Anxiety symptoms are elevated among people with joint hypermobility. The underlying neural mechanisms are attributed theoretically to effects of variant connective tissue on the precision of interoceptive representations contributing to emotions.1

In some people with joint hypermobility there can be an association between anxiety and POTS.

Ligamentous laxity is often hereditary, meaning it can be passed down through families. 

Underlying Conditions:In some cases, ligamentous laxity can be a symptom of underlying conditions like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Down syndrome, or Marfan syndrome. 

Symptoms:Besides joint pain and instability, other symptoms can include muscle pain, stiffness, fatigue, and even digestive (e.g. GERD, IBS), bladder (e.g. IC/PBS) or neurological issues.. Symptoms of anxiety disorders may occur, this may have an association with dysautonomia syndromes like POTS or mitral valve prolapse syndrome.
