Autism

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. It is characterized by a wide range of symptoms and is considered to be a spectrum disorder, meaning that individuals with autism can experience varying degrees of impairment.

Mental health conditions

Mental health issues are common in people with autism, with up to 80% experiencing some mental health condition. They can include:

  • ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Irritability

Physical conditions

Many physical conditions, including heart and lung conditions and diabetes, are more common in adults with autism. Other common physical conditions may include:

  • Neurological issues
  • Stomach and digestive problems
    • Constipation
    • Acid reflux (GERD)
    • Dietary issues (food allergies and intolerances)
    • Pica
    • Abdominal pain
