ALPIMS-Friendly Home Setup Checklist

Use this checklist to create a home that supports regulation, comfort, and recovery across ALPIMS domains. No need for perfection—just focus on what’s most helpful right now.

🔅 Lighting

  •  Soft, indirect lighting (lamps instead of overheads)
  •  Adjustable light levels (dimmer switches, lamp shades)
  •  Blackout curtains or eye masks for rest zones
  •  Warm bulbs (2700–3000K) to reduce overstimulation

🔇 Noise

  •  Noise-buffering materials (rugs, curtains, soft furniture)
  •  White noise or nature sound machine
  •  Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs available
  •  Clear boundaries around quiet time in shared spaces

🌬️ Air & Smell

  •  Air purifier with HEPA filter or open window ventilation
  •  Fragrance-free or low-odor cleaning/laundry products
  •  Avoidance of incense, plug-ins, and scented candles
  •  Use of essential oils or gentle natural scents (if tolerated)

🪑 Comfort & Ergonomics

  •  Soft seating or layered comfort options (pillows, throws)
  •  Adjustable posture options (lounging, upright, supported)
  •  Accessible rest areas (not just the bedroom)
  •  Support tools (footrests, joint supports, compression wraps)

🎨 Visual Environment

  •  Calming color palette or neutral tones
  •  Clutter minimized or stored out of sight
  •  Soothing imagery or grounding personal items visible
  •  Designated “uncluttered view” for mental reset

🎧 Sensory Zones

  •  Red Zone Nook: low light, comfort tools, no input
  •  Yellow Zone Support Station: sensory tools, hydration, lists
  •  Green Zone Creative/Work Area: organized, inspiring, ergonomic

🧃 Regulation Essentials (Keep Nearby)

  •  Clean water bottle or herbal tea supplies
  •  Heat pack, cold pack, or topical soothing gel
  •  Weighted item (blanket, lap pad, stuffed toy)
  •  Fidget, chew, or comfort item (sensory tool)
  •  Timer or visual cue to support pacing/rest breaks

🧾 Optional Add-Ons

  •  Zone signs or traffic lights (Green–Yellow–Red cues)
  •  “Please knock / quiet time” door signage
  •  Crash kit drawer: flare/emergency items in one place
  •  Sensory calendar (light, sound, mood tracking)

🧭 Start small: even one regulated corner is a powerful intervention.
