The simple version
  • Food does not have to be cooked from scratch to count as a meal.
  • Ready-made, frozen, tinned and pre-prepared foods can reduce the work involved.
  • A few reliable meals may be more useful than a long list of complicated recipes.
  • The right level of meal may change with your capacity.
  • Adapt ideas to your own dietary, medical, sensory and cultural needs.

Eating can become surprisingly complicated when capacity is low.

Choosing what to eat takes thinking. Shopping takes planning. Preparing food takes physical and cognitive energy.

Then there may be washing up afterwards.

The meal does not need to be impressive.

On a difficult day, the most useful meal may simply be one that is realistic enough to prepare and eat.

Why can making food feel so hard?

Cooking is not one task.

It can involve:

  • deciding what to eat
  • checking ingredients
  • standing and moving around the kitchen
  • remembering several steps
  • handling smells, heat, noise and textures
  • timing different parts of a meal
  • cleaning afterwards

When you are already dealing with fatigue, pain, migraine, sensory sensitivity or brain fog, those demands can add up quickly.

Assembly counts

Food does not have to become a recipe before it counts as a meal. Putting several manageable foods together can reduce planning, preparation and clean-up.

Match the meal to the capacity

The meal you can manage may be different from one day to the next.

On a higher-capacity day, you might cook.

On another day, heating something may be enough.

On a very low-capacity day, opening and assembling food may be the more realistic option.

Make the meal fit the day.

The goal is not to force today’s capacity to match what you normally expect of yourself.

Choose a few default meals

You do not have to remember twenty options.

It may be easier to choose four or five meals that work reasonably well for you and keep the ingredients available.

Defaults reduce the number of decisions required when your thinking capacity is already limited.

Repetition can reduce cognitive load.

A familiar meal means fewer decisions about what to buy, how to prepare it and what happens next.

Cooking can also be a sensory task

Kitchens can involve:

  • strong smells
  • heat
  • running water
  • extractor fans
  • appliances
  • bright lighting
  • multiple textures

If sensory load is part of what makes food preparation difficult, reducing those demands may matter as much as simplifying the recipe.

Make the whole food task smaller

Sometimes changing the meal itself is only part of the solution.

You might also reduce the surrounding work.

  • sit while preparing food
  • use pre-cut or frozen ingredients
  • use one-pan or one-bowl meals
  • keep frequently used foods easy to reach
  • use delivery or click-and-collect where available
  • ask someone else to prepare part of the meal
  • leave non-essential clean-up until later
Look at the whole task.

Sometimes the difficult part is not eating. It is deciding, shopping, preparing, standing or cleaning afterwards.

If you have dietary restrictions

The examples on this page are general ideas.

Food needs can be very different between people.

Allergies, intolerances, gastrointestinal conditions, migraine triggers, swallowing difficulties, sensory needs and other health considerations may all affect what is appropriate.

Adapt the ideas to foods that are safe and workable for you.

The meal only needs to do its job

Some days that might be cooking.

Some days it might be heating something.

Some days it might simply be putting a few foods together.
