Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine is used to treat various symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including anxiety, sleep disturbances, and irritability. It works by affecting multiple neurotransmitters and has sedative properties that can help with insomnia and anxiety.167

In a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial, mirtazapine showed promising results in reducing anxiety in children and adolescents with ASD, although the improvement compared to placebo was not statistically significant. 1

Some individuals with ASD have reported that mirtazapine has helped them manage their symptoms, including sleep issues and mood disorders.4 However, there are also reports of side effects such as increased hunger, weight gain, and vivid dreams.4

Mirtazapine is not a first-line treatment for ASD and its efficacy is not well-established compared to other treatments. is often used when other treatments have not been effective or when specific symptoms require targeted pharmacological intervention.1

For individuals with ASD, the use of mirtazapine should be carefully considered and monitored by a healthcare provider due to potential side effects and the need for personalized treatment plans.
