Hyperventiliation literally means over breathing. Sometimes hyperventilation can be triggered by breathing too deeply, or more frequently as a response to an anxiety or panic attack. To help hyperventilation you need to slow down your breathing. You can use techniques such as
- Box Breathing
- Butekyo
- Pursed lip breathing
Practise these techniques during hyperventilation, and when you are not having a hyperventilation (anxiety/panic attack), so your brain gets to autonomically know what to do when you do.
Hyperventilation/hyperventilation syndrome is common in people who have experienced trauma and also in people who are dealing with anxiety disorders and or dysautonomia sydromes (e.g. POTS, joint hypermobility, mitral valve prolapse, ME/CFS and fibromyalgia.
